Siegfried

Siegfried is conceived as Wotan’s final solution to the ring’s curse: a hero unbound by divine law, fear, or knowledge. Unlike the gods, Siegfried acts instinctively rather than strategically. His strength lies in his freedom—and his downfall lies in the same trait.

  Götterdämmerung: He begins the opera as a hero but becomes an unwitting pawn. Ultimately he is murdered, ushering in the gods' demise.

  Siegfried is introduced as a heroic figure, and in shattering Wotan’s spear he signals the collapse of the old order and the possibility of a new world. However, in Götterdämmerung his heroism is undermined by deception and manipulation. Siegfried's journey suggests that the world  is too corrupt for traditional heroism to have any real power.

  Wagner wanted Siegfried’s sword-forging scene to sound so real that he created a metallic soundscape in the orchestra, including tuned anvils.
  

• San Francisco Opera History

  
  San Francisco Opera’s first Siegfried was the Danish heldentenor Lauritz Melchior, a legendary specialist in the heavy Wagner tenor roles (Siegfried, Siegmund, Tristan, Parsifal, Tannhäuser, Lohengrin). Melchoir's voice is preserved from numerous broadcasts from the 1930s and 1940s.
